Choosing a Wedding Officiant

May 31st, 2006 . by Michell Jonas

Many couples these days are having weddings in venues other than a church. If you do not know a minister, the internet is a starting place. Do a search for wedding officiants or wedding ministers in your area. You will most likely find several sources with a variety of names. After reading the information about a number of officiants, call several and do a phone interview prior to scheduling a meeting. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Is her/his voice pleasing?

  • Did she answer your questions fully?

  • Did she listen?

  • Was she accommodating as to time and place of the initial meeting?

  • Do you like her approach to designing a wedding?

  • Do you think she would give you adequate assistance and be available to you as much as you need?

If you did not have a positive experience on the phone, thank the potential officiant for her time and get off the phone because chances are great that this is not the right officiant for you.  If you are pleased with the interview, then by all means schedule a meeting for you and your beloved to meet with her or him. Call as many as you need in order to get two or three you would like to meet in person. Most officiants or ministers expect you to do this and are not in any way insulted when you say you will get back to them. It is an important decision - the officiant makes or breaks your ceremony - and you have the right to choose one who will make your ceremony spectacular.
